This week, I'm writing to each of you who's keeping watch over a pet who is aging or ill.
Thank you for taking responsibility for your animal companion.
It's a hard gig, isn't it?
Animals don't use words to tell us what's wrong. So, based on signs we see – and only the ones we know about – we make our best guesses whether our pet is suffering. And we rely on what our veterinary team has told us might be happening.
That can mean that we question our decisions and doubt ourselves. And wish we could know what's really happening. And, of course, that we could take away all the pain.
My heart goes out to you. Please make sure you get the support you need.
P.S. That's me, taking care of my second greyhound after a horrid injury, with practical help and emotional support from of some good friends. She survived and lived to a mature age.
